Strong is the New Skinny

When I began my fitness journey more than 20 years ago, I believed I had to workout to be “skinny.” I watched what I ate — calorie for calorie — and I lifted weights purely for the idea of being able to. During the past 20 years, my thinking has shifted. I no longer want to be skinny. 


I’d rather be strong. And as it turns out, strong is better than the number on the scale. 


Strength is about what your body can do, not how little space it takes up. It’s about feeling capable, confident, and supported in your everyday life. When you train for strength, you stop punishing your body and start working with it.


Chasing skinny often leads to exhaustion, under-fueling, muscle loss, and frustration. Strength training changes that. Building muscle boosts metabolism, improves posture, supports bone density, and helps regulate hormones—especially important for women as we age. The result isn’t bulk. It’s a leaner, more defined, more resilient body.

Strength is also functional. It shows up when you carry groceries, lift kids or grandkids, protect your back, and move through life without fear of injury. A strong body feels steady, not fragile.

You may even notice the scale doesn’t move—or goes up slightly—when you begin strength training. That doesn’t mean it’s not working. Muscle is denser than fat, and body composition changes before weight does. Clothes fit better. Energy improves. Confidence grows. Those are the wins that matter.

Strength training is sustainable. It supports long-term fat loss, reduces injury risk, and adapts with you through every stage of life. This isn’t about quick fixes or extremes. It’s about building a body that functions.
